Ultimate Xmen Vol 1 + Vol. 2 : The Tomorrow People and the Return of Weapon X By Mark Millard

Ultimate Xmen : The Tomorrow People & The Return of Weapon X ( Trade Paperback) – ★★★★☆

This is the first time that I’m reviewing a comics series so I really don’t know where to begin with. I’m going to start off by telling you that I didn’t get the actual trade paperback but the issues instead ( yes I like collecting them haha). I got the #1 to #12 which is the equivalent Volume 1 and Volume 2 of the trade paperback.

What is Ultimate Xmen about ? For starters, Marvel announced in summer 2001 a new line of titles: Ultimate Marvel. This includes Ultimate Spiderman , the Ultimates, Ultimate Fantastic 4, Ultimate Xmen, etc. The goal is to update these iconic characters to a more realistic present-day looks. I know the Ultimate project universe by Marvel has mixed reviews but from what I see so far, it is really tempting to start on reading other Ultimate series too .

I read Xmen 1991 series in my childhood and for those of you who read a lot of Xmen, you’ll notice that it’s the same goal over and over again. The thing I love the most about this series is we get to see Xmen in a new artwork with a more detailed, adult touch and raw wildness ( Jean Grey’hair though is a big no for me ahah). Millard triumphed in creating a new era for the Xmen, with brand-new beginning and unusual introduction to the characters while keeping their personalities and personal histories. The action is great and the characters have enough screen time to be introduced which is a plus for me . I’ve always disliked that they always put Wolverine as the spotlight stealer (LOL but that’s just me).

For now, I really like the storyline. In Volume 1 ( #1 to #6) , we follow Magneto and Professor X try to find a way to protect the mutants. While Professor X tries to show the people the mutant’s good side recruiting new mutants , Magneto believes that the only way to survive is to take control over the normal people and destroy them. This rivalry will make him do an ultimatum. In Volume 2 ( #7 to #12) , the X-Men are being held captive by the Weapon X program , what do they want with them and who will save them now? I will keep you updated for the following issues to 😉

So you want to see your favourite Xmen characters in a new skin and cool attitude ? This is for you 🙂

  1. Myself, I collect the volumes. I’m sure I could collect the issues if I devoted the time, but… Meh.

I have a mixed view of the Ultimate Universe. On one hand, Ultimate Spider-Man is really terrific. On the other, The Ultimates is incredibly dreary, dark and gritty to the point of it becoming a cliche. The X-Men series was pretty solid from the few issues I read though, so I may have to check them out again.

And yes, I, too, am excited for Apocalypse. The sooner I get to see Quicksilver again, the better!
