The Unseen Face by Joannes Rhino

 The Unseen Face : ★★★★★

“I was like a piece of meat, run by machines to keep alive. Everything seemed stagnant and hopeless.”
– The narrator, The unseen face

What cannot be seen, makes us afraid. However, what happens when you can still feel it? Like a shadow haunting us. It makes us fear the depths of our very soul. This is what happens to James, who will discover the hidden side of his life, an Unseen Face. At first, he feels that something is wrong with him. Depression, anxiety, what else could it be? It’s the ultimate quest that James and his psychologist Jonathan will try to demystify.

“All of the passing days are now just like a single breath. If the substance of words is a breath of life, then I have no more life to breathe.”
– The Narrator, The unseen face

I will be honest here, I just love this book. You want to know how to write a successful killer twist? Then, read this book and take notes. You will be going on hell of a ride ! Joannes Rhino succeeded in illustrating a lost, confused young adult and made it all feel natural. Not forced, without trying too hard. Just the right amount. I am a huge fan of dark psychological thrillers and plot twisting is one of my favorite elements in a story. This book’s ending blew me away. The author did the trick by cutting out the obvious, the climax reached in such an unforeseen way that in the end everything made sense. The fact that we get to discover it at the same time as the narrator makes it even better.

“I have found out that if you want to now the purpose of something, you cannot ask the thing to tell you. A robot doesn’t know why it is a robot. Only the manufacturer knows what it was made to do, and I guess that’s the way it is with us and the universe.”

– The Narrator, The Unseen Face

A lot can happen in a person’s mind and being able to capture it, maybe just a glimpse of it, is hard and can be a difficult task. Rhino’s writing is polished, clear and builds the tension throughout the story with constant conflict scenes until the  beautiful revelation in the end, where all loose ends are solved and nothing is left as a cliffhanger. It’s the kind of book that you want to read a second time to spot all the connecting dots and clues from the beginning.

A big thank you to Joannes Rhino for sending us a free copy in exchange for an honest review and for taking the time to answer our questions.
