Throne of Glass by Sarah J.Maas + Read-Along

MY RATING: ★★★☆

I’ll start by saying that I had really high expectations for this book from all the hype I see around WordPress,Goodreads, Tumblr and Instagram. Like, litterally everywhere. For those who haven’t read this book yet and are wondering hmm what’s this book about and why is it so popular ? Here’s my summary for you: Celaena, who’s a famous assassin has to go in competition against other criminals to become the King’s Champion, in other words, the King’s Assassin. In the meantime, she gets close to Chaol, the  captain of the guard and Dorian, the Crown Prince. A little romance here and there and bang.  You got the story for the novel. That’s it?! No no !! My favourite part in the novel : there’s a series of mysterious murders happen inside the castle and nobody has a clue. The bodies are placed in the most bizarre way possible. Now you must ask yourself, omg..is it a horror story? NAH. REALLY NAH. The suspense is there but you won’t have nightmares about it.

“Libraries were full of ideas–perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons.”
Sarah J. Maas, Throne of Glass

Overall, I didn’t find the book as amazing as I thought it would be. The first chapters of the book were quite slow but it did help on developping the characters and the plot I have to give that. Also, I expected way too much from our protagonist. I expect her to be kick-assk, cold hearted murderer and assassin.

She was the opposite. Sensitive, princessy-like, fall in love too quickly for an assassin who is supposed to kill people and not get attached easily (that’s only my opinion in comparison with other assassin’s characters I’ve read so far). My friends, if you read the book with this knowledge I’m sure you’ll appreciate more haha. Being more prepared is always good!

However, in the end, man the book didn’t disappoint ! I gave it 3 stars for something, right? You got to see the characters’ development and the story unfolds into some real actions that I’ve been dying for.  My advice is this : if you start the book and you like what you’re reading, that’s great! If you don’t, continue and do not give up since the ending is totally worth it and it makes me want to read the rest of the series.

Furthermore, from what I’ve read on Goodreads reviews is that  there are two type of people reading the book, you either like Celaena character and personality or you don’t. I must admit, I didn’t haha but once I knew she was a bookworm and can get some kick-assing done, OKAY I’M SOLD. No seriously, connecting with the characters is quite important for me that’s why I mention this in my review haha.

I also had the chance to do a Read-Along with Anette , Lora Shouse and Luke Taylor ! What is really cool with this read-along is you can actually see our different opinion about the book LOL I think it’s pertinent to mention the variety and diversity of opinions for this one.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

In conclusion: read it and see it for yourself.

1.I’m the only one who had a problem with her personality LOL Screen Shot 2016-02-21 at 1.00.11 AMScreen Shot 2016-02-21 at 12.56.48 AM

2. We all agreed on the lack of actions but again.. Screen Shot 2016-02-20 at 5.18.01 PM

3. I’m totally TEAM CHAOL ❤ Dorian reads books yes good good. But that’s it. And I’m even more team Chaol at the end because at least, he steps up when Celaena gets beating badly by Cain while Dorian didn’t do anything. Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 8.54.35 PM

  1. Oh, my. What a fun and colorful review!
I read this one a few months ago and was frankly disappointed. I only gave it 3 stars, which means I certainly enjoyed it and will continue the series, but it definitely didn’t meet my personal expectations set by all the insane hype! I do want to keep reading the series, though. I hear that they get better, so I’m optimistic.

    Also, team Chaol here. :}

    1. Yeah I totally get you!! Hahah I would’ve gave it a 3 too if the ending wasnt that satisfying for me LOL The hype .. is so insane. Overhyped. Yep. There are MUCH better books out there ahhah xD But I didn’t read the other books yet so many.. its worth the hype ! Let’s seee for ourselves 😉 Thanks for passing by!

  2. Awesome review! I agree with you that she was quiet sensitive and quick to get attached (waaaaay to easily) for an assassin. I would think that assassin’s would have trust issues and be closed off, especially after she was in “jail” for a long time (among other things). Buuut I already knew that she was like that going in, so I wasn’t caught off guard – meaning no disappointment for me! 😀 I seriously need to read the second book, it’s been super long and I need to continue with the series.

    1. YES TRUST ISSUES HAHA A lot of people told me how expectations are the main point of why this book can either disappoint you or not so yehh you did a good job by coming prepared haha 😀 It’s good enough for me to continue the other books in the series as well, let me know if you want us to buddy read 😉 ! – Trang

      1. Hahaha, yeah that’s what I hear as well and I am really glad that I was prepared! 😀 I do plan to continue on reading it as well, it was quiet fun and I am interested in finding out how the story is going to continue (plus I have heard from a friend that the series gets better, and that the second book is especially good). And also yes to the buddy read! 😉

  3. I’d say the book is good, but not great. Celina’s personality didn’t bother me, but she’s much softer than the second cover suggests. My suspicion is that she doesn’t do much killing in this book because there isn’t much opportunity for it. Whenever I do read the second book, I’ll find out if that changes or not.

    1. Hahha exactly 🙂 I’m glad that you didn’t have a problem with her personality! I intend to read the second book too 😀 Let me know what you think once you get to read it and thanks for sharing your thoughts 😉 – Trang

  4. Great review, and nice to see some Read Along comments! The thing for me about this book was that I didn’t know what to expect. Although, being more of a young adult book (at least in my opinion), I have to admit I wasn’t shocked by the more princessy-romancy touch in the story.

I liked Celaena though. She was still quite bad-ass with her skills and all that, and I figured the “non-assassin” qualities just came from her position. She’s young and even though she’s basically a prisoner, she has some free will. She’s not picking up contract after contract. She’s surrounded by beautiful things (and, ahem, people) which felt like a new thing for her. So I could understand her shifting further away from the cold hearted murdered business.

But it’s just the first book. Once she gets down to assassin mode, things could be very different, and I’m interested in seeing how she changes over the series.

    1. Ouhh yess :O That a really interesting point of view you are bringing here and it made sense 😀 Thank you hahaha I didn’t see it like that ! True I have to admit I forgot that she was still a young teenager and I have to place myself in her shoes at that age. AND HELL YEAH Beautiful people ❤ HAHA It's crazy how its just a book but we can still imagine how hot they are in ur heads 😀 I'm glad you stopped by! I'll be bying the other books in the series as well and hopefully we can share our thoughts again for the next ones 😉

  5. It’s funny how you had really high expectations yet ended up rating it 4/5, and I had really low expectations but still could only give 2/5 XD I’m starting to wonder if I’m just really hard to please when it comes to fantasy?

If I have to pick either Team Chaol or Team Dorian then I’m Team Dorian XD Let’s see if that’s still the case after I’ve read the next books. Could be fun to compare our thoughts again after we’ve read Crown of Midnight 😀 I’m not sure when I’d get to it but I think I’m going to buy it soon.

I still haven’t gotten around to writing my review, I think I’ll have to leave it for tomorrow!

    1. I KNOW RIGHT AHAH ITS SO FUNNY I swear when I see your 2/5 I laughed so hard because I ended up liking it and you didn’t LOL Ouh yeahh lets compare for the next one 😀 I didn’t buy it either..:( #waitingforthatmoney hahaa #PAYDAY ! Maybe you have read a lot of fantasy books ! And that’s why nothing suprises you anymore :O

      1. HAHA I can’t wait to write the review, because I have a lot to say. I didn’t think it was terrible, but I do have some specific complaints that made me have to lower the rating. And I actually haven’t read that much fantasy at all, at least not high fantasy :O

  6. I’m glad I’m not the only one who didn’t care for Celaena. I feel like her overtly sensitive nature is supposed to remind us of the original Cinderella? I’m not sure… She kicked more ass visualizing in her mind than in actuality which drove me nuts.

    1. Omgad!! I couldn’t say it better LOL kicking more ass visualizing in her mind THATS IT . THATS IT. THE PERFECT ANALOGY 😀 Thanks for stopping by!! So happy that were two on this!

  7. I really need to just start reading this series! Everyone has good things to say about it.

This was such a helpful review. I definitely would have gone in expecting all action scenes and found myself surprised by romance. I think right now I just hope everything with kick ass ladies will be like Jessica Jones, haha.

    1. JESSICA JONES YASS ❤ She will make a better assassin that IS 100% SURE. 😉 Well, I'm happy that I helped you! I will recommend you reading it since.. everyone has different opinions about this book and you have to see it for yourself 😀 Can't wait to see what you think about it! (feel free to pingback to this post so I can read your review too 😉 )

  8. The Kindle version of Throne of Glass that I have had a little interview segment with Sarah J. Maas among the little special features at the end. In it she mentioned that the original inspiration for the story was the Cinderella story – as in ‘what if Cinderella wasn’t there to marry the prince, but to assassinate him?’ But when she went to write the book, it went off in a whole different direction. In addition to getting the sequel, I had to get the Assassin’s Blade prequel too.

  9. You should read the second book!!! There’s way more action! I actually felt the same way before reading Crown of Midnight, but now I’m on Heir of Fire and I’m loving it so much. There are so many characters’ evolution; it’s amazing 😀
