MY RATING: ★★★★☆
The blurb from Goodreads: As Princess of Wonderland Palace and the future Queen of Hearts, Dinah’s days are an endless monotony of tea, tarts, and a stream of vicious humiliations at the hands of her father, the King of Hearts…
GUYS, THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING ! I’ve had so much fun while reading this. Dinah is not your typical heroin. There’s some darkness in her blood because she was raised by a fearful and dominant father. So difficult that he has no shame in completely ignoring and threatening her. Dinah is such a complex character, having at her side a not decent father-daughter relationship and her little brother, who becomes mad after their mother’s death. She has no one to turn to except her childhood best friend, Wardley. She discovers there are tenebrous secrets (IT IS REAL DARK MY FRIENDS, ALRIGHT) behind this castle’s walls and as the future Queen of Wonderland, she will do anything to find all the dirts that are infecting her kingdom.
“[…] But something else, something hungry, was clawing its way up her stomach, spreading its poison, its delicious red fury rushing through her limbs”
– Colleen Oakes
The suspense in this book was astonishing and you will ask yourself a lot of questions ! Colleen Oakes did quite a job for keeping us entertain until the end. The downside of this book is probably the plot holes but again, it’s the first book in a series so I can’t wait to find out the answers in the sequels. Love the spooky side the story delivers !
All the references from Alice in Wonderland were on point. Litterally, I couldn’t ask more for a retelling, it was perfect. You will find Mad Hatter, Cheshire and more familiar names in an unexpecting way.
Thank you to Frenzy at HarperCollins Canada for sending us an advanced review copy !

I liked the smaller references like Vittoire’s handmaidens Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee. And I’m not quite sure if Vittoire is the White Queen or if she represents Alice. Do you know?

Oh my god I’ve never thought about Vittoire being a reference in Alice in Wonderland :O THATS SUCH A GOOD QUESTION. I dont remember but in the book, somewhere it mentioned a Dinah describing her going in the rabbit hole and I thought maybe that she was Alice turning into Queen of Hearts after Idk o_o omg we should totally ask/tweet the author!! LOL

Yeah! And they describe her to the T as looking like Alice. Blonde hair, ocean blue eyes, likes to where whites and blues. Go ask and find out 😛

Yess I can’t get enough of them!! My favourite is A. G. Howard’s Splintered trilogy but I’m also REALLY enjoying Frank Beddor’s The Looking Glass Wars. I’m itching to pick up Alice in Zombieland soon, too – that seems to be getting quite a lot of good reviews!!
