Book Review: Vicious by V. E. Schwab

MY RATING: ★★★★★

“Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human.”
― Victoria Schwab, Vicious

I’M BACK Y’ALL AHHA It’s been a month since my last review ..ouff ! I was quite busy sorry 🙂 But I’ve read this book a few months ago and I. FELL.IN.LOVE.

theplot

Imagine you’re in university and you have to chose a topic for your thesis and you can choose anything. ANYTHING.

Victor and Eli are two longstanding friends, college roomates and best friends who are passionate about science and especially in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and eventually linking them to supernatural events. Eli thinks that under the right conditions, a human can develop extraordinary abilities. It started as a friendly interest into a deadly competition. tumblr_mxtxvwwigt1qkxw76o1_500

I love the plot so much, it sparkles the research interest in me and I can imagine myself thinking about those possibilities, a new form of life. If you can have superpowers but only in near-death experiences, would you risk it ? The story is about jealousy, revenge, misfits, all the flaws in humanity that no one wants to talk about.

One of the main themes of this novel was the good vs evil concept. For once, there’s no good vs evil. Victor and Eli are both villain who think they’re doing good for the right purposes. I really don’t think there’s any flaw to this story. You’ll discover amazing powers and very authentic too.

characters

Victor is a sociopath, crazy disturbed by the thirst of revenge and somehow his lack of empathy makes his monologues even more interesting. The characters’s development is more than perfect.  The author succeeds to give us a satisfying background story on every character without being redundant. They are all very interesting and even if I hate one of the characters on the novel, I had to admit that I ended up loving the character in question in the end.

P.S: Victor’s power is the coolest thing I’ve ever read in the history of mutants and powers. I’ll let you discover it on your own 😉 writing

THE WRITING IS GOLDEN. I wouldn’t even put this book as Young Adult since the characters are in their 30s, very mature dialogues and monologues. The writing style is VERY eloquent and addicting.

Overall, I always think that an excellent story should have an excellent villain, and guess what.. WE HAVE MORE THAN ONE EXCELLENT VILLAIN HERE.

I think the book was writing for me.

giphy

I’m going to cry in my pillows now because there’s no sequel.

It’s a single treasure discovery.

And there’s no more of it… I think I’ll just re-read it.

  2. I only read ADSOM so far, well, the two books of the series, and I really liked Schwab’s imagination and world-building. I feel like that’s definitely her strong suit after reading this synopsis, SO unique,… also you made me want to read this badly, aerm, my TBR is going to EAT ME haha.

  3. I picked up both Vicious and This Savage Song from my library last week, but the election results have me a serious need to focus on sunshine and puppies and romance. I was considering returning the books, actually, but your review has reminded me why I got Vicious in the first place. Hopefully my post-election mood won’t prevent me from loving it as much as you love it.

    Excellent review! =)

    1. HAHA I understand that mood post-election. The Canadian memes were exploding on my feed here hahah I hope that you will survive honestly 😣 And yeah if anything I think Vicious can be a pretty good distractor for this post election mood hahah 😉! – Trang

  4. Great review, and I’m really glad you enjoyed this book as well.
V.E. Schwab is one of my all-time favourite authors and though her Shades of Magic series is my favourite Vicious is a close second. Also there is a sequel for this book. There’s no blurb or cover for it but it’s definitely in the works, and until it is released there’s a prequel as well in case you need more from this world! 🙂

      1. Yep, it’s called Vengeful and there’s no cover, blurb, or release date so I think it’s a fair way in the future but it definitely exists! 🙂
Oh definitely ADSOM is my favourite and just amazing. I’ll recommend it to anyone and everyone! 😀
