Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst

It started out great. The world building seemed good, the characters seemed lovable and not getting on my nerves. But then it suddenly shifted to something else entirely. I decided to finish the book because I had hope it would get better but it didn’t and I’m pretty disappointed.

Throughout the story you expect to understand the plot holes. But nope. You don’t get to. We never really understand why Denna was bethroned first, the wars between kingdoms how did it start? I think these information and so many other can contribute to a greater world building.

Secondly, the characters are just black and white, I like my characters with a few shades of grey:  Complicated but fun to see their real development. These ones were bland. Denna and Mare’s romance can be seen by the first pages. A lesbian love would be unique you think! No, the author didn’t take the stories to another level. They only get to develop it like in the other half of the book with like a kiss… and they il would take forever for they make a move again. But you can clearly see from the first pages they’ve been eyeing each other.

The pace was slow and I took forever to finish the book. I consider myself a fast reader and if a book is really interesting there are 2 options : I finish it in a day or I slow it down on purpose. This one was neither. I just didn’t want to read the rest but I kept doing it until I finish it.

Overall, it was an okay read, didn’t have any distinctive flavor or whatsoever. As a vivid YA Fantasy fan, I expect more and more from new books nowadays. To surpass the books stereotypes and being able to bring a new and unique perspective.

That’s it for today y’all 🙂

I would like to thank Harper Collins Canada for giving me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

  1. Oh it’s a shame you didn’t enjoy this book Trang. I’ve read books where the characters have been bland and two-dimensional and I just couldn’t get into them at all so I get where you’re coming from. I don’t normally mind slow paced books but there needs to be something to keep my interesting and it just doesn’t sound like there was anything like that in Of Fire and Stars.
    Still great review. 🙂

    1. Exactly ! Slow paced books can be pretty insightful and has some depth. This one just doesn’t. In fact, I think the author makes it action packed so it would seem like it was not slow paced. Somehow, the atmosphere seemed slow and the descriptions were bland and soulless. -Trang
