MY RATING: ★★★ (3.4) /5
There’s this unspoken myth that the sequels can never top the first movie? But somehow, Marvel succeeds to eradicate that myth because in some of their movies, the sequels were actually better or vice versa. It’s hard to tell for me when I finished watching the vol.2 of the Guardians of The Galaxy. It was better in a way but also less amazing in another way. Let me explain.
My first thoughts when I come out of the movie: I LOVE IT. I mean wow, BABY GROOT?! I think this CGI alone can win everyone’s heart. Marvel knew it and even the villains couldn’t get pass his adorable face. It’s a family friendly experience and they did right by their target. I couldn’t stop laughing and giggling about how adorable Baby Groot was, because omg I don’t want to spoil anything but he was so precious in the opening scene.
Like in the 1st movie, the signature of Guardians of The Galaxy is the throwback music from the 1970s and the Awesome Mix Vol.2 didn’t disappoint. The music propel us to a fun vibe in this all space opera adventures. Elo Mr BlueSky and Fleedwood Mac- The Chain. I was happy to rediscover a few songs too 🙂 And of course, the visual effects are absolutely extraordinary, something we should all be very proud of for this era’s technology has to offer.
The plot centers around family issues, when Peter discovers his ancestry, Gamora has some hard times in reconnecting with her sister Nebula, while Rocket Raccoon still being the biggest jerk and finding himself some common points with the villain Yondu, and Drax being the straightforward guy as he is. I appreciate the way they center it around a more emotional plot than the other Marvel movies. They took the time to show us some very interesting character development.
Weirdly, the only one I didn’t seem to connect is the main character itself, Star-Lord. He may play a center role in the plot but he failed to convey any emotions in me. The laughter and the funny moments are still present but I can feel they are more forced than the 1st movie.
The villain itself wasn’t much impressive while he should be. He’s a f**ckn God. But something was off, maybe it was the weird wax sculptures he was showing. I guess while the director wanted to make this a character driven plot, he encounters the problem of a sometimes sloppy narrative and transitions between the scenes.
Overall, Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2 stays true to it core and still manages to expand its universe and introduce us to new cosmic characters. However, when you look closely at the script and the plot surrounding the main character it’s not that impressive nor well done. I still don’t know what was the point of the Empathic Mantis in this sequel. Why a 3.4? As movies and TV Shows have now some incredible visual and audio effects, I would expect them to be more creative in the plot and how they deliver the story. Those are the points that really weight in to me.

A little recap of what’s going on with Marvel’s Infinity Stones and Adam (if you stayed for the 5 post-credit scenes)!
Appearing in the post-credit scene with The Collector from the 1st The Guardians movie, we see a cocoon :
and then again in Thor: The Dark World
That means Adam is in the works for a long time now. If you dig into the comics, you find Adam Warlock. The ultimate super human: flying, heal himself (pratically immortal), strong, pretty cool right? But, his principal strenght comes from The Soul Gem… which is.. THE LAST of the INFINITY STONE that we haven’t see yet. If you haven’t paid attention, here the recaps :
That’s it for today! 😀 Have you watched the movie? Share your thoughts in the comments!
Drag. Given the first movie I had high hopes for the sequel. But it doesn’t sound like watching it is a waste of time. Check, I want to see it just for baby Groot! And thank you for the recap of the Infinity Stones Trang. I had lost track.

I am living for this review, guys. The only reason I enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was the humour and the star of the show, Baby Groot.
Personally, I thought the whole father-son trope was quite fleshed out and I didn’t like that it focused too much on Peter and his Dad. And there was too much talking! Ugh. But that ending ruined me. Well played, Marvel.
Thanks for the recap of the Infinity Stones too! ❤

OMGG IM SO HAPPY YOU AGREED WITH ME! Same thing! The whole Peter and his dad plot could be amazing if they went for another direction or at least has some insight on Rocket Raccoon Past or Drax

I liked Vol.2 a lot more than I did the first but mainly because I liked this one’s Awesome Mix more. Baby groot was just ❤ I did find the father-son trope slightly weird but then again, I was more into the ‘fun stuff’ of the film anyway. Also, the constant reminder that romance would lower the ratings was hilarious! When I got to that last post-credit scene, my first words were ‘who the eff is Adam?’
I actually started crying at the end though. It was ridiculous. My friend kept patting my head to comfort me 😂
Your recap of the Infinity Stones is making me want to do a MCU marathon. Thanks btw!

Yeah from the comments of this post I think everyone agreed with you 😂 For me the second is better in some aspects like the emotional side of the story while the first the plot more spot on 😀 LOL Omg my friend told me he cried too 😂

That is true. I was listening to Awesome Mix Vol.1 the other day and I realised that I know almost all the songs, which is awesome. I’ve been seeing a lot of comments from people saying that they cried LOL

Yes to adorable baby Groot! I loved him ❤
I agree. I think sometimes the humour was forced, and I didn't really care all that much about the "my father is (an evil) God" plot. It was a bit predictable (which is fine because if you're a fan you knew who he was all along) and I didn't really care for it. However, the ending pulled me right back in.

I’m so glad you reviewed this movie, thank you 🙂 I haven’t seen it yet but I will at the end of the month probably and I am SO excited, especially to see baby Groot, I have to admit it ahah 🙂 I’m sorry to hear it felt a bit forced at times and you didn’t connect as much to the main character. I hope I’ll enjoy it when I get to it 🙂

OMYGOSH! I LOVED YOUR REVIEW!!! This movie to me was also slightly better than the 1st thanks to the power of baby Groot’s cuteness lol. I wasn’t a fan of Peter’s dad, his story line just wasn’t doing it for me. Your breakdown of the stones is SUPER helpful, now I can sound super knowledgeable when talking to my Mr. LOL! 😉

Great review for this film Trang, I saw this a couple of weeks ago and really really loved it! I did kind of think this was better than the first film but then again I seem to think each Marvel film is better than the last. I’m sorry this one wasn’t as good as you’d hoped it would be. Part of me agrees that the villain of the film wasn’t that impressive considering who he was supposed to be but Baby Groot was just so adorable it kind of made up for that! 🙂

Yess I think everyone agrees with you on that ( the first one > second) I think it’s better only for some specific aspects 😀 but I AGREE BABY GROOOT THO 😍👌

I agree with you completely. I fell in love with Baby Groot, the music was awesome, the family topics too, but the Star-Lord character and his father just left me hanging and waiting for more. I did find the film really funny.

Bummer! I was hoping for much more out of this one. It sounds like they missed the mark with their MC and villain which is a total shame. I will still watch as I enjoyed the first, but maybe I will try not to go in with such high hopes 😉

Nice review, I actually found myself enjoying Vol. 2 more than the first one to be honest. I wasn’t completely swept away by the first initially but was definitely more ‘into’ the Guardians story this time around! Baby Groot and Rocket were certainly awesome.

AWW BABY GROOT HAS ALREADY WON MY HEART!! Ok, now I’ve got that out my system I’ve heard similar things about this film- it sounds like it’s good in a lot of ways, but it seems to have missed the mark on a few things. Still sounds like it’ll be fun to watch (even if it’s sadly not as good as the first one)
