– 20/07/17 – Bookidote Top Books (2nd Bloggiversary)

I failed to pick 5 this month, but these two are my favourite discoveries ! One recommended by Lashaan, because I loved Rupi Kaur’s debut poetry collection Milk and Honey and two, villains always fascinated me and a lot of bloggers have recommended this book πŸ™‚

Strangers on a Train – Book that inspired one of Alfred Hitchcock’s famous movie. I couldn’t resist and thought I should quickly check it out and finally check something off my must-watch movie list.

Kindred – I’ll have to thank Danielle for making me add another book to my TBR. A classic, to be precise. Science fiction dealing with some really interesting themes. I just had to.

Krampus: The Yule Lord – I actually have another book by this author on my TBR since my days of blogging, called The Child Thief, but Trang recently recommended this and I just had to add it too. πŸ˜€

Blackwing – If you haven’t heard about this book, you must’ve been living under a rock! Liz and The Orangutan Librarian both wrote absolutely stellar reviews for this book and made anyone who didn’t have it on their TBR already feel crazy levels of shame. Check out their reviews by clicking on their names. πŸ˜€

Dead Poets Society – This classic that inspired the classic movie simply screams classic. πŸ˜€ I’m a sucker for classics, so don’t be surprise about that hihih

Trang: Got the chance to see Atomic Blonde, which is like a female version of John Wick and I loved it πŸ˜€

Lashaan: Sequel to Son of Batman, Batman vs. Robin explores the relationship between Damian and Bruce and brings the Court of Owls to animated DC Universe for the first time. This movie was so brutal and had some non-PG moments that truly shocked me, in a great way. Batman: Bad Blood is the recent sequel to Batman vs. Robin; it has nothing to do with Taylor Swift’s song. πŸ˜‰ Great introduction to Batwoman and a fun movie overall. DC never fails their animated movies. That’s for sure. I also completed the recent season (5th) of Orange is the New Black. Don’t ask me why I’m even watching this. When the first season came out, I was intrigued by the whole female prison and the exploration of the institution. I simply have a hard time just forgetting about it and feeling like I wasted my time (last couple seasons haven’t been so great. But.. Diane Guerrero though. ❀ You’re probably not surprised that I also watched Spider-Man: Homecoming. Excellent movie. Check out my review for more on my thoughts! Finally, my final mention has to go to Okja. This was simply one of the strangest, silliest yet beautiful movie to have been released by Netflix. Just expect to stay away from bacon after this movie. The only other person who can attest to this movie’s weirdness is Kat. She’ll vouch for me. πŸ˜€

If you’ve seen any of these, feel free to mention it in the comment section. I’d love to fanboy/hate with y’all! πŸ˜‰

Trang: My favourite book as a movie!! AHHH and directed by Steven Spielberg πŸ˜€

Lashaan: Okay. There’s actually a lot of amazing trailers that were released this month, but when this teaser came out, I was just reminded of its quality and couldn’t wait for it to release!

  1. I’ll happily vouch for you, Lashaan! Okja was SO weird, but also great … but also really strange hahaha mostly strange.
I also want to say that I watched Atomic Blonde and fell in love with it. I think I just needed the German music to feel more connected to home though.

  2. I watched the 5th season of Orange is the New Black, and I thought it was not great. It was way to drawn out (all those episodes for just 3 days!!). There are some characters that stand out, I’m sooooo glad Piper isn’t in it as much because I can’t stand her character!!

I watched the new Spiderman movie and I thought it was great. I actually liked it more than the other movies, probably because it didn’t focus so much on the romance side of things. I also loved Michael Keaton, I like him in pretty much everything though because he is so versatile.

I can’t wait to see Atomic Blonde!!! It looks so good and I LOVE Charlize Theron, she is just brilliant. I saw the Ready Player One trailer and I don’t know how to feel. I think it is just because books to movies doesn’t always go great. I will try and remain positive however!!

Have a great month Lashaan and Trang!!

    1. I totally agree. They dragged the whole riot thing WAY too long. It became soooo dumb at some point. It’s funny how Piper was basically the main character when this show first came out. Now they’re really exploring every single possible character throughout the season. I think it sort of diluted the show for me though. I can’t tell if they’ll succeed in making the show fun again with season 6..

Keaton was AMAZING! I’m really glad that he got to do a great villain without being overshadowed or barely explored. He’s definitely the highlight of the movie for me hahaha

Have a great month, Steff!! πŸ˜€

  3. I love OINTB but season 5 in particular didn’t impress me much. I didn’t know that Narcos will continue. I mean, I thought the story ended in season 2 but I am definitely curious about how Season 3 will be. Thanks for sharing the trailer.

Have a wonderful new month πŸ™‚

    1. Same here. They really messed it up by dragging the whole riot sequence for a whooooole season. It also didn’t feel like there was any HUGE memorable moments, but Tasty was definitely baws this season. πŸ˜€

They just released the full trailer for Narcos the other day!!! You have to check it out! I knew the show wasn’t over even if you saw the end of Pablo since they teased the next biggest cartel that we’ve ever known at the end of season 2. Sooooo looking forward to this!!

Have a wonderful August, Diana! πŸ˜€

    1. A lot of the books we’ve read were actually new releases too though! πŸ˜€ Maybe you’ll discover something you’d love to read in the near future hahah You should totally try the first episodes of Orange is the new Black. It’s fun and nasty at times. πŸ˜›

      Have a wonderful August, Yasmine!!

  4. Great Wrap Up! I loved Because You love to hate me! It was so much fun to read! Blackwing sounds pretty awesome! I can’t wait to read it! I haven’t read Ready Player One yet but I’ll definitely check it out soon.

  5. Seems like you had a great month, Trang 🌸
I’m so excited for Rupi Kaur’s new poetry collection too! I haven’t yet read the full works of Milk & Honey, but I’ve read snippets and I really like her style.
Also Atomic Blonde sounds so good! I loved John Wick and a female version of him would be so kickass 😊

      1. Aaaw thanks so much, Trang πŸ’•
I’m so happy to be back! Definitely going to be on the lookout for Atomic Blonde when it comes to our cinemas 😊

  6. Seems like you also had a great month, Lashaan 😊
I totally get what you mean about OITNB! The earlier seasons were so good and Season 5 just seemed to drag on forever! Tasty was such a badass though and I felt like that’s the thing I enjoyed most this season πŸ’• I’ve been meaning to watch Narcos for the longest time, maybe I’ll get into it soon!

    1. Exactly! They really messed up by keeping the whole riot deal over a whole season. Good thing there were some pretty decent performances, notably Tasty. I HIGHLY recommend Narcos, if the subject interests you. It is such an amazing and informative show with outstanding characters. Absolutely loveee it! ❀

  7. You guys had a busy month… Totally thanking you for linking my review Lashaan.. what an honor! Blackwing is gonna knock your socks off πŸ˜€ I hope!
Krampus is one of those that I discovered because I saw a movie last year and I was like- now THAT’s a christmas movie πŸ˜€ hahahaha and then discovered there’s a book… I’m totally getting Krampus for xmas time… ! πŸ™‚

    1. Gotta keep yourself busy in life, right? πŸ˜€ Ohhh, no problem at all!! You share my stuff all the time too though hahaha I feel like I owe you WAYYYY more than this simple gesture! But your review definitely hyped me up for the book. Hope to read it in the near future. πŸ˜€

Oh man, it would definitely be quite atmospheric if I pick it up for xmas. Might do just that. πŸ˜› Have a great August, Liz! Stay awesome. πŸ˜‰

        1. It’s a Netflix original movie, so if you have an account, you’re sure to have it. πŸ˜€ I warn you, it’s has a really unique style, at some point pretty satirical. It’ll be fun in the long run though, especially with its impressive cast.

  8. Ahh I’m so so glad you want to check out Blackwing now!!! It’s such a good book!!! πŸ˜€ Thank you so much for linking to my review πŸ˜€ And now I want Dead Poet’s Society on my tbr… trouble is if it makes me cry half as much as the film, I’ll be a wreck πŸ˜‰ I really want to read the Because you love to hate me anthology too!
hehe I haven’t seen the male version of John Wick… I need to rectify that already. Hehe I totally skipped out on the whole orange is the new black thing- I just wasn’t feeling it and I don’t regret that decision now πŸ˜‰ I want to see Ready Player One so much!

    1. No problem at all! Everyone should totally check out your review to find out why I’m convinced I should give it a go ASAP. πŸ˜€ Hhahahah I have the feeling the book will do just as well or better than the movie! That just seems to be the case with sooo many classics, and sooooo many book to movie adaptations hahah

Honestly, between you and me, you’re not missing out on anything with Orange is the New Black. If you’re feeling a bit bored and want to explore something different, with humour, try an episode or two. Otherwise, it isn’t a huge game changer in television hahah

  9. It seems like you both had a really good July, you certainly got through a lot of books between you! πŸ˜€
Lashaan I haven’t read either Strangers on a Train or Dead Poets Society but one of my friends has, like you she’s a massive fan of classics, and she really enjoyed both so I hope you do as well. Also I saw the Spiderman Homecoming movie a little while back and LOVED it, it was hilarious and so much better than I expected which was a nice surprise.
Trang I haven’t read Ready Player One yet but oh I saw the trailer for the film and now I need to read the book. Also I hope you enjoy Because You Love to Hate Me. I read that a little while back and even though I’m not a massive fan of anthologies that was one I really enjoyed. πŸ™‚
I hope you both have a brilliant August as well. πŸ˜€

    1. That is definitely reassuring! I really do hope I’ll get to read them soon, before I forget they exist and have to wait a couple more years before rediscovering them and finally reading them hahah #bookwormstruggles I’m so glad to hear about Spidy!!!! I told you were going to adore it hahahha It was such a fun movie, and a great addition to the Marvel universe! Hopefully Sony understands how successful it is to share rights to the characters they have with Marvel now! Hope you have an excellent August too, Beth! πŸ˜‰

      1. Forgetting books exist for a while before rediscovering them is kind of how my TBR list works if I’m being honest.
And yes you did, I’m not sure why I doubted because I have loved every Marvel film to date, but it was so much better than I ever though it would be! Yes hopefully, I’d l’ve to see more Marvel characters actually go back to MCU so we can get more films! πŸ˜€
        Thanks Lashaan. πŸ™‚

  10. Ahh!! I feel like that Krampus cover is haunting and following me wherever I go. It’s so scary looking.
And YEA!! Atomic Blonde was freaking awesome! I love the ending and her hair. And the fight scenes and the badassery. Saucily awesome!
