Summer Movies Review

You will go in for a treat today for I’ll be reviewing 5 movies woohoo! 😀 Don’t worry, I’ll keep it short and straight to the point.

wondewoman

Finally, another superhero movie with a female as the main character ❤ ! You get to see her childhood, to fully grown fierce woman who has to decide her own fate. Gal Gadot nailed it in every way.  Plus, women warriors kicking ass and fighting . I went out of the movies theatre and wanted to be an Amazon so badly.

I’ve never seen a superhero so empathic and having the biggest moral clarity ever, some would mistake it even for naivety.

The only thing that I didn’t like is the villain. As we discover his identity, I thought the character in the movie was not really fit for the real villain we should be seeing from the comics. He lacks..that OP VIBE you know? Also, too much bad CGI for Wonder Woman’s fighting scene… so the fighting seems less natural in some scene,  I’m sure she’ll be just fine without too much graphic effects.babydriver

THIS MOVIE WAS SO REFRESHING. I didn’t know what it was about but as soon as I heard : MUSIC FUELS THE DRIVER. I WAS SOO IN. I loved music from the 70s and 80s and if I was a car racer, this movie would be my life in every single way haha.It was also violent and gory *smirk*. Loved the casting ! Ansel Elgort and Lily James take on characters we’ve never seen them before. Kevin Spacey , well, doing his spacey magic on screen. The humor from Jamie Foxx was perfect. The only side characters that I didn’t like much was Jon Hamm and Elza Gonzalez, I feel like they didn’t add anything new to the story.

The entire movie is like a musical without the characters having to sing nor dance, the entire soundtrack guide us into believing it.

Charlize Theron was born to be the female version of John Wick (same director).   Her acting and fighting scenes were perfect. A lot of people complained about the lack of emotions in the movie but I find it perfect like that. You are not supposed to be emotionally disturbed when you are a good spy. Charlize show us enough of her humanity and quickly hide it with wits and remember her place in the world. There are two things I didn’t like was some of the plot feels… empty and cold (no shit duh Trang, it’s in winter). It just sets the whole movie in a weird way. And James McAvoy character was also a mess, he plays a rebel Berlin spy but we never really understood his place.

spiderman

Definitely my favourite movie of the summer just because there were not a lot of cons I find in this Homecoming. The villain development and introduction was on point. Every superhero movie should look at this one as an example to settle the villain gently. Tony Starks appears only a few times and it was perfect like that for the movie is not focused on him. His best friend, HILARIOUS. Finally a teenage Spiderman I could believe in and relate if I was a hero at that age.

P.S: Thank you for not including the Uncle Ben’s death scene again because after 4 movies, I think we all get it.

dunkirk

I recommend this movie for those who LOVEE and are PASSIONATE about beautiful cinematography. Christopher Nolan plays with his angles here and offers us an unique perspective of war. It’s quiet, and then suddenly thousands are dead. He offers raw and reality in which I had no idea. The parallel plot and out of sync timeline make this movie a nice puzzle to decrypt and enjoy. However, I fell asleep in the movie for the repetitive explosions (very nolan-y) and actions.  It is quite different from any movie on this post so far and you may hate it or love it depending on your taste. If you like a nice family action with plots and effects, this may not be for you. It is slow, quiet and a lot of repetition scenes.

  1. Lovely reviews, Trang! I really want to see Wonder Woman and the Spiderman movie – glad to hear there isn’t uncle Ben’s death scene in that one ahah. It always broke my heart. Glad to hear that Spiderman is relatable 🙂

  3. Great reviews for these films Trang. The only two I’ve seen myself are Wonder Woman and Spiderman: Homecoming but those two are two of my favourite films from this year I think. I am now so excited for Spiderman 2 and Justice League! 😀
Also I’ve heard some really good things about Baby Driver so I’m glad to see you enjoyed that one too! 😀

  4. Great post! I loved Wonder Woman and Spider-Man (so happy they didn’t include the Uncle Ben death scene and Peter looked and acted like an actual teenager). I understand your criticism about Dunkirk. As someone who loves cinematography (and Nolan!), Dunkirk was my favourite movie out of all of them. One of my favourite of all time, actually. 🙂
Also, I’m looking forward to seeing Baby Driver. I’ve heard great things about it.

  5. Great Reviews, Trang 🌸
I definitely want to go and see Wonder Woman and Baby Driver! I’m a music junkie and I loved Ansel in The Fault In Our Stars so I’m really psyched to go see it!

  6. Ok so this post made me so excited!
Wonder Woman was okay for me. I wasn’t wowed by it.
I’m playing around with going to see Baby Driver. Dunno yet
Atomic Blonde was friggin awesome!! I didn’t have a problem with the lack of emotions and I didn’t see it as a lack but that she’s able to compartmentalize things and is very professional. The movie made me think of the comic book series Velvet, which I love because the protagonist is also a badass. I liked how cold the movie is but I do agree it feels empty and could use a little more oomph. And I dunno what was up with James McAvoy’s character. For some reason, the character made me think I was watching parts of Split again.
Spiderman I plan to see sometime this week before it leaves theaters and I’m not a fan of war drama movies.
Btw, really want to see DarkTower.

  7. I desperately want to watch Wonder Woman and Spiderman!! It sounds like they were really well done- even if Spiderman had the edge, with the better villain (and so glad it *finally* has a relatable teen in the role!!) Fantastic reviews!!

  8. Thank you for these reviews! The movie I have had a chance to seen out of these five is Wonder Woman and I loved it. Gal Gadot and Chris Pine worked wonderfully together. She is a total badass, I loved her in this just as much as I did in the Fast & Furious franchise. I hadn’t heard much about Baby Driver but I definitely want to see it now. I really wanted to see Atomic Blonde but didn’t get the chance to while it was in theaters. Just like Gal Gadot, Charlize Theron is also a total badass. I also missed my chance to see the new Spiderman movie while it was in theaters. My brother went without me, I was so mad. Luckily, he did not spoil it for me. I intentionally didn’t see Dunkirk in theaters, only because it’s so expensive to go to the movies! I want to see badly though. Thank you again for these wonderful reviews.

  9. Wonder Woman was a great film and I really enjoyed it, despite the cringe worthy, CGI-crap fest of an ending. I think it’s a testament to the film’s greatness that it survives a truly dreadful ending. I loved the fact that for the first 15 minutes of the film, the film was entirely women.

I enjoyed Dunkirk a lot, but I think it helps because I knew that this was Hitler’s best chance to win the war so I knew the stakes couldn’t be higher. I also enjoyed the inventive nature of the film but I question whether or not the film will work on Blue-Ray.
