Heartless by Marissa Meyer

MY RATING: ★★/5

“The easiest way to steal something, is for it to be given willingly.”

It’s really rare that I don’t finish a book. I always  force myself to finish a book to, at least,  say with certitude that I didn’t like it.  I read 241 pages of this novel and I had to stop. I couldn’t endure it. But then, my best friend was like okay aren’t you intrigued by the ending at least? So I went straight to the ending and read it. And damn, I LIKED THAT LAST PAGE.

But for me to endure 400 pages to get 2 pages in the end worth it? I DON’T KNOW. So y’all, here’s why I couldn’t finish it but I still rate it 2 stars for the ending.

I don’t know what happens to Marissa Meyer after The Lunar Chronicles, but oh gawd, everything felt so cheesy and odd.

Heartless  is set to be the prequel to Alice In Wonderland, yes another fairytale retelling. And no it’s not that good unfortunately. I was expecting a darker and more sinister from one of the most popular villains of all times.  Instead, we have Catherine a marquess daughter who’s passionate about baking. The King has a crush on her but OH STRUGGLE she doesn’t like him back and OH she doesn’t want to be queen… Meanwhile, there’s a Jabberwocky terrorizing Wonderland.

I couldn’t get myself to like Catherine, like at all. From the beginning she keeps annoying me with her  love for bakery and all her oh caramel salé here and there. If you had to pick all the French stereotypes and throw it in a character, this would be her. I’ve never seen the word macarons so many times in a book… For a person who loves sweets, this overuse of macarons really got on my nerves. OKAY WE GET IT. SHE LIKES TO BAKE. FANCY PASTRIES. PLEASE MOVE ON.

One of the most predictable instalove ever. She ha it all way too easy since the beginning. Enters the ballroom with the only girl in dress boum, she’s getting proposed by the King but oh no she had to run away and BAM she meets the love of her life, Jest, a Joke, who’s not in nobility enough. OH MISERE. Can you imagine me rolling my eyes? I couldn’t care less about her romance either. Jest, the Joker, is nothing but a joke. Frankly, he has the least character development of all.

After 240 pages, I see that the plot is not getting better, the characters were still annoying that I would just waste my time. Then, I read the ending. A really nice ending. It’s like she puts all her efforts just to get the ending right and it did so I’m giving stars for that.

Thank you to Raincoast for giving me this book in exchange for an honest review !

  1. I totally agree! I loved the Lunar Chronicles series but really ended up disliking this book and I couldn’t get through it!

  2. This is such a shame to hear. I’m reading the Lunar Chronicles right now and Overall I’m enjoying them. I was looking forward to starting this after but reading your review I don’t think I’ll bother. I don’t see myself enjoying it.

  3. Okay, first of all “all her oh caramel salé here and there” is the best line I’ve ever seen in a review! 😛
Second, I’m so torn about this book! I’ve seen a positive review and your review…it seems like a you’ll-either-love-it-or-hate-it kinda book. I think I need to read it for myself to make up my mind 😛

  4. Oh I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy this book Trang. I actually really enjoyed Heartless but I’ve seen a fair few mixed reviews for this book and I guess it’s not really a read for everyone, especially if you were expecting something darker from the story and Cath.
I agree I loved the ending, but if that’s the only part of the book you enjoyed it probably wasn’t worth reading the two hundred off pages leading up to it.
Still great review, and hopefully the next book you pick up will be better. 🙂

  5. Can’t say I’m familiar with the Lunar Chronicles or the author, but I understand how disappointing it can be when an author or movie director comes out with something that’s just … lame.

  6. I haven’t read this yet but I’ve seen so many people got disappointed with this book. I might read this someday but I’m not in a hurry to pick this up soon. Great review! 🙂

  7. Lovely review as always 🌸
I’m so sorry you didn’t finish this! This was actually my first Meyer book so I had nothing to compare it with and I ended up liking it! I however totally get what you’re saying, it did drag in places and it got really boring towards the middle and end, also it made me really hungry 😛

  8. I have only read Cinder so far in the Lunar Chronicles, I really enjoyed it and plan to continure, but I have been hearing a lot of not so good reviews on the Heartless book. I’m not sure if I will read any further.

  9. Yes!!! I realllly struggled with this book- I don’t blame you for DNF’ing- the ending was good, but it wasn’t good enough to justify trudging through the rest. I also hoped it would be darker and have a grittier plot than just the king fancying her. And Catherine and the instalove- boring!! I agree with you one hundred percent here- though I couldn’t put my finger on why it didn’t do it for me at the time- but your review has illuminated it for me!! 😀

  10. Soo glad to see someone else wasn’t a fan of this one, haha. I thought I was going to love this because I’m obsessed with Wonderland and love seeing what made villains become villains, but this was so boring and instalove-y. It was such a disappointment! The only part I liked was the last few pages 😂 Great review!!
