Bonfire by Krysten Ritter : Yes, Jessica Jones wrote a novel

Let’s be honest, with all the celebrities wanting to write books (and Youtubers…), I was skeptical whether this was going to be good or not. So, how did Krysten Ritter deliver?

I always have a hard time appreciating contemporary thrillers (as you can see in my previous reviews for A Stranger In The House or The Girl On The Train), but this one did its job.

It’s a fast-paced gripping thriller with an incredible story background and depth.

Shoutout to  Dani☆Touch My Spine Book Reviews☆  for reading along with me!  It was pure coincidence when we find out we read the same book on Goodreads and since we just happen to bond with each other we decided to buddy read LOL

« Bonfire was not only written by the amazingly sexy and custom Krysten Ritter, it was a story filled with epic twists and turns. I felt like I was living the main characters emotions! When I thought I had things figured out, the author completely throw me off guard! A highly recommended legal thriller!»-Dani☆Touch My Spine Book Reviews☆

1.The protagonist, Abby is an environmental lawyer and she’s going back to her hometown  to investigate Optimal Plastics, a high profile company. (Okay wtf Trang how’s that a good reason?!) HEAR ME OUT.  How many books have you read with this profession in it and tackled environment issues? It’s the first time I encountered a protagonist with this career and oh hell, it was so interesting! I can see that Krysten Ritter had to do a lot of research in the legal terms to even tackles those issues.  It’s not the kind of boring facts about ecology, it’s making us realize how big corporations can endanger thousands of lives. It reminds me a lot of Suits the tv show.

2. A mix of thriller and toxic high-school teenagers. Bullying at its most horrific form. Abusive parents. You can find a whole bunch of unpleasant but subtle scenes in there. This is where lies her strength. The author doesn’t need to explicitly describes an abusive relation scene, she uses one to two sentences from a flashback that makes you go : OH SHIT. OH SHIT. THIS HAPPENED.

3. Strong characterization. Abby is a messy character with a haunting past, but at least she’s good at what she does: investigating. She reminds me a lot of Jessica Jones herself. Always looking for a glass of alcohol to forget her past but it just comes right back at her. She will have to confront her demons herself.

Kaycee is a side character, an old classmate of Abby who ran out of town a long time ago and Abby never knew what happened to her. She’s one of the characters I found super compelling and creatively well done. Why? Because we only get to know Kaycee through Abby’s’ memories and well… this girl  Kaycee was dangerous. I can’t imagine if she was there and we get a peek of her piece of mind.

4. The denouement is mind blowing! It makes so much sense but so terrible and disgusting at the same time. By disgusting I mean.. not “horror movie way” with monsters eating children. Disgusting in a way it’s out of the society norms way.. I don’t even know if that makes sense.

Thank you to Penguin Random House for giving me an advanced copy in exchange for a  review!

  1. This was a book of the month selection, but I decided to wait to see if it was any good before reading it. I was a little wary of a book written by a celebrity. I’m glad you liked it! I’ll have to add it to my TBR list. Thanks for the review 🙂

      1. The first 3 months are $9.99, and after that $14.99 a month, for one hardcover book. Then $9.99 for any extra hardcovers. But they’re always books being released that month so a lot of times I get them before their release date. It’s definitely less expensive than buying or preordering a hardcover book somewhere else 🤷🏼‍♀️ I just like getting a package every month haha

  2. I LOVE JESSICA JONES OMG I DIDN’T KNOW SHE WAS INTO WRITING?? This is the coolest thing I’ve heard today 😂. I’m tempted to check it out just because it’s already so awesome. Your review is great ❤!

  3. Great review! I tried to get my hands on an early copy but it just wasn’t meant to be 😕 I think the first I remember seeing Krysten Ritter was in Gilmore Girls, and I’m excited to read this now!

  4. OMG TRANG!!!! I absolutely loved your review girl! I wish I was as badass as you!😉 Man, looking at the segment I wrote real quick, I see all the grammatical errors! Fail! You really know how to portray the essence of a story girl! You are so talented and such an awesome girl! I loved fangirling you and I’m glad this book was filled with twists and turns!!!😎 Thanks for the shout out beautiful! I love your GIFs and sorry didn’t respond sooner! I agree with all your points on this review Trang! You rock!😍😘🙌😎

  5. I read some time ago that she was going to publish a book, but I was really sceptical (for the same reasons you state at the beginning: another celebrity book? help…), but your review really makes this book sound like a good read (I love Suits, btw). The premise is nothing new, somehow similar to A Civil Action, but all the small details/ subplots seem surprisingly interesting. So I think I’ll put this book on my wishlist after all. Thanks for the review. 🙂

  7. Oh great review for this book Trang. 🙂 I knew Krysten Ritter had written a book but didn’t know much about it beyond that. I’m really glad you enjoyed this one, and the fact that you said it would be perfect for 13 Minutes means I definitely need to add it to my to-read list! 😀

  9. I’m about a third of the way through this book. I honestly really enjoy it so far. I like that she doesn’t have a typical job. It made me happy because that is what I plan on going into once I finish college. I’m excited to finish the book!

  10. I haven’t watched Jessica Jones yet.. I will though because I loved her performance in Breaking Bad and I am in love with Tennant. I had no idea she had written a book! Your review is stellar and you had to throw 13 Minutes out there.. so now you know I will have to read it haha.

  11. Gosh your reviews are awesome!! It’s so cool that Jessica Jones wrote a book and that it’s good (in my head she will always be her character 😉 ) I actually really like the sound of the toxic stuff going on in the background (that sounds so wrong when I put it like that 😉 ) And I love the sound of the characterisation and denouement!! Fantastic review!!

  12. OK! EPIC FRIGGIN REVIEW!!! I have a copy at home that i picked up at Bookcon this summer & i’m gently kicking myself for not getting around to it sooner lol. I am a BIG fan of SUITS!!! well I need to catch up with the last season but now you’ve got me hyped up for both the book and the show lol. The career would def be of interest for me, love when I come across characters that are fully fleshed out & we know their field of work but it’s clear that the author put in that work to research….makes for the best books 🙂

    1. I need to catch up on the last season of Suits too tbh LOL HUHU I would totally binge watch it with you if we were neighbors tho ❤ So happy you like this review!! The career IS SO INTERESTING. I didn't know about it at all !

  13. When you mentioned that she has written a book, I expected it to be an autobiography but was definitely pleasantly surprised that its in one of my favorite genres and going by your review, this is a book that I definitely need to read. Fab review.

  14. Thrillers are totally NOT my thing, but I am certainly captured by the idea of an environmental lawyer MC! That’s so cool! It’s amazing how many legal thrillers I think I’ll dislike and then suddenly BAM: I’m addicted. Do you think this book falls more into the legal thriller or psychological thriller sub-genres? Or perhaps something different?

  15. This book is on my TBR so I didn’t read the review TOO closely because I want it to be a complete surprise. This is the first review I’ve seen for this and I am SO EXCITED for it, so I am super happy you loved it. You’re right – not-writers-writing-books can go terribly wrong but I am a big fan of Krysten Ritter and I’m really glad it went well!!! :D. Thank you SO much for sharing this review, now I’m at, like, excitement level 75.

  16. I love Krysten Ritter, she’s my favourite part of everything I’ve ever seen her in! So glad that I’m seeing so many good reviews of her debut novel, I will definitely check this out when I’m in the mood for a thriller! Brilliant review!

  17. My gosh is she pretty. How can you both write books and be this beautiful 😀 it’s simply not fair to the rest of us mortals :DDD

And a good rating too! By the way, speaking of buddy reads. If you ever want to do one (I’m thinking scifi??? We seem to overlap greatly!) I sometimes do these amazingly fun buddy read interview reviews. Like, we buddy read and give each other questions about the book, and the review on our own blogs. If you ever want to try that out, I’d love to. It makes the reviewing bit easier as well. And I’d say more fun 🙂 if you’re curious about what they’re like, I did two posts on my blog, one for Attachments and one for The Punch Escrow. Have you read The Punch Escrow, by the way. It’s some amaaaaaazing scifi too.

Anyway, it’s cool to hear that she nailed it! Not every day you see a celeb write a good book that isn’t a memoir 😀

    1. I KNOWW SHES SO PRETTY ❤ It's not fair indeed LOL
And I would LOVEE to do a read along with you Evelina! 😀 I just love doing those posts too! I like to feature different peoples opinions about the same book. It's more entertaining 🙂 What are the next books high on your TBR? 😉 I THINK I GOT YOU ON INSTAGRAM TOO. We can chat there as well ❤ ! I've never heard of The Punch Escrow but I just put it on my goodreads TBR TEEHEE

  18. Thrillers are NOT my favorite Trang, but I am captured by the idea of an environmental lawyer! I agree that is something I haven’t read much about but LOVE the idea of… And that video is so cool! I love seeing inside the minds of writers, even celebrity ones 😉 ❤

  19. Great review Trang..Since I have myself just started writing book reviews so I am going through lots of reviews today and I must confess , this one is one of the best that I came across..short & crisp yet full insight….besides,I too have recently reviewed a thriller – The Wild Cat – a deviant tale of a young women trapped amidst cyber crime because of an online dating app. Here goes the review :
