Following DC’s tradition, after Leigh Bardugo’s delivers a strong Wonder Woman, now it’s time for Marie Lu to write her version of Batman ! If it was to fall on co-blogger’s hand, Lashaan would have probably praised this book just for the fact that it’s Batman LOL #diehardfan but unfortunately, it went through me, a personal hater of Batman from the start. So let’s see how this novel perfom !
What I can tell you is this: Marie Lu has officially succeeded to make Batman less irritable and more bearable.
The backstory of the villain. Madeleine is a complex character and it is one of the focus of the novel. She’s a criminal, detained in Arkham Asylum after being seeing on a murder scene of a billionaire. However, there’s so much to her. She’s only eighteen but extremely smart too. The prologue was so good and it starts from her perspective and if I’m being completely honest here, I wish all the book had her POV. LOL Madeleine reminds me a younger version of Eurus from Sherlock. She can trick people even if she’s in jail.
If the book didn’t have that much downsides, her character’s development alone could have all the stars in my rating.
The action-packed scenes. Marie Lu always nailed that part, whatever the story she always makes it interesting, writing it with detailed and pertinent information like a script of a movie, you follow the action from afar while being able to see the emotions on the characters’s face.
The plot. It was extremely predictable. I could’ve seen all the answers to the story right after Bruce met Madeleine in the Arkham Asylum. That was around 50 pages to the story if I remember correctly. The insta-romance was just so weird to read about. Harvey and Diane are not even that noticeable and Bruce’s character development was totally absent from the book. We get to read about his personality and how he has problems with the justice system but I didn’t see any real evolution of the character.
Arkham Asylum. I don’t like Batman but I love everything about The Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally insane, from its history to the people contained between its walls. Personally, Marie Lu missed a big point about this institution. She turned it to a real prison with a few levels where Madeleine is contained in the most restricted area. What I like about the original asylum is that.. it’s a psychiatric hospital. You don’t just turn this popular institution to a normal prison…That’s just disappointing.
The psychology and criminology behind this novel. I already expressed how I was let down by Warcross’ visual neurosciences representation and again, I’m sorry but I find a lot of misrepresented psychology facts in this one. To my rescue, I also got some criminology experts to check up some other facts with me aka Lashaan 😉
I intended to write a big rant about it but I’m just going to tell you guys some additional facts that the book just seems to forget mentioning because the author might think it’s too much for the young readers but I believe they are all smart enough to understand :
- “Doctors” in this book are referring to prison psychiatrists, their role is to maintain and evaluate the mental health and state of the prisoners. They usually treat inmate mild to severe mental issues.
- They never mention Madeleine’s issue or why she needs Dr James under her supervision but from the details the book gives me, my guess is she has Antisocial Personality Disorder. Because of their manipulative tendencies, it’s hard to see if they’re lying or not.
- Antisocial ARE NOT Asocial. Antisocial = disregard of rules in our society like laws and go into the violation of the rights of other people (often criminals) . Asocial means avoidance from other people (so if you like to read at home and avoid all events of going out and see your friends, it’s being asocial) .
I would still recommend it because it was more than 3 stars , which means it was enjoyable! If you’re not strict on the psychology and criminology parts, you will have plenty of fun discovering Madeleine 😉 She’s my favourite part of the book!
Big thank you to Penguin Random House for Young Readers for the ARC copy in exchange for an honest review ! 🙂
In a story like this, I wasn’t really anticipating a romance… However I’m still excited to read this- Great review ❤

Amazing review! I have always been a Marvel fanboy myself, but the one character I always liked in DC comics was Batman. Even though this book doesn’t seem like a classic, I like a lot of the elements that you describe for it. So I will be checking this one out at some point next year. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one 😊

Gahahha I’m a Marvel girl myself but I’ve never liked Batman somehow ! (You can guess what were arguing about me and Lashaan most of the times) LOL Hopefully you will like it! Although its very “young adult-ish” hehe

And I’m glad the villain had a good backstory. Shame it was predictable and thanks for filling us in on the psychology side!! 🙂 Awesome review!

Hmm.🤔 I was hoping this was going to be more in the 4-5 star range given who the author is. I think I’ll probably have the same issues as you did, so I really appreciate your honest review Trang. I still want to read this, but I think I’ll save my money and borrow it at the library.

Thank you for appreciating my honesty!! Some people would’ve disagreed but hey it’s my opinion right 😉 I think these are some issues that may be similar to yours (regarding how you review books) so def let me know if you intend to read it but not it’s still super fine (THERE ARE PLENTY OF BOOKS OUT THERE LOL)

Thanks for the explanation of anti-social vs a-social. So as long as I don’t shoot anyone breaking into my house or bust some heads with a baseball bat, I’m just a-social and perfectly normal, right? Awesome!

Well it depends, in that case you may not be even asocial if you like to socialize in general hahaa 😉 Asocial are the people who don’t like to talk to people, a complete lack of interest in social events for example and if we go even further, a lack of desire to form relationships.

Great review, Trang! I’m sorry you didn’t love this book as much as you wanted to. I’m not usually reading to many superheroes stories, but I love Marie Lu so I’m thinking of maybe trying at some point, to see how I enjoy it ahah 🙂 I’m also really intrigued by the character of Madeleine 🙂

Fantastic review! Still not sure how I feel about Superhero books per say. I think I may still to graphic novels when I take the plunge and then work my way up 😉 I will keep your thoughts in mind if I decide to tackle this one though, so I know what to expect!

Omgad definitely comics and graphic novels are still the medium to go for superheroes! Something about novels set me off a bit and made me skeptical XD

Yeah, I am not a fan of the idea pf exploring them outside of comic format or film. I feel superheroes are meant to be visual! 😁

Oh I’m glad you enjoyed this book Trang, though a shame it wasn’t a five star review for you. 🙂 The fact that you’ve said Lu makes Batman more bearable makes me a lot more confident for this book, and I’m very interested in the villain now because I love the sound of Madeleine’s character! 😀 ❤

FANTASTIC REVIEW LOVE!!! but one thing did I hear you right are you a Batman Hater?!!!!! 😱😱😱 Lol. Well it stinks the plot was so predictable and we all know Lashaan would have put a glowing review! Lol but I have to admit I am a Batman fan myself!!! I mean think about it you have all these superheroes who have their special powers because of some freak accident or something but not with Batman. He is an ordinary guy who went through trauma as a child and became badass no super powers required!!! So I am with Lashaan on this one with being a Batman #diehardfan but with that being said I am more of a diehard fan of you and your epic posts and reviews! Love ya babe!😍

Hell yes to BATMAN!!!! 😀 ❤ Although if Marie Lu messed up Batman's lore, I'd have given the world a nasty rant for this book. And knowing Trang, I'm sure all her points are valid regarding this book hahahah The only thing I disagree with her is her hate for Batman. Cause BATMAN IS THE BEST!!! 😀 GRIM, DARK, COMPLEX AND BADASSS!!! The villains part of his lore alone make him the best hero out there!!!! HMPH 😎

Honestly, I loved teenage Bruce Wayne in this book! He was super sassy. As for the plot issues, I kind of agree about predictability, but I think there were still a few spots where I was like “WHAT?!”.

Oh I 100% rooted for Madeleine! She was SO crafty and manipulative and I wish we got to see more if her, or even her POV would have been interesting. I haven’t read any more Marie Lu yet but I’m hoping to get to them eventually!

I was going to read this if I could get an arc but after your review I’m just not that interested… Though Madeline sounds like a great character I’m wary as ALL Marie Lu romances read almost as instalove… and I can’t stand inaccurate psychology. ♥️ Great review Trang!

Great review! 🙂 It’s too bad this book missed the mark on some points. I’m really excited to read the Wonder Woman: Warbringer novel, though. It’s on my 2018 TBR list. I’d bought it as soon as it came out but by some cruel twist of fate just haven’t had the time to read it yet. 😛
