I think it’s been like forever I haven’t blogged and I felt so empty LOL This post is about one of my favourite novel EVER! Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer was such an unique experience that I’ve been postponing its review because I felt like I would NEVER do this book justice. Here I will try my best to describe my love for the book.

“The map had been the first form of misdirection, for what is a map but a way of emphasizing some things and making other things invisible?”

Area X is an unknown area under a military surveillance. 4 women from four different expertise are recruited to go in that restricted area and collect data. A biologist, a psychologist, an anthropologist and a Surveyor. I KNOW I’M THE QUEEN OF SHORT DESCRIPTIONS.

The main strength of this book is the ability of the author to reinvent the psychological thriller using the atmosphere and words to build something completely unnerving. It crawls under your skin. It makes you uncomfortable but you are attracted by it at the same time. The whole magic lays behind the suspense of not knowing what we are going into. We only have the descriptions from the biologist perspective but that’s enough to make us and wonder and scared. The elements of Area X are strange and wonderful. Jeff may be genius or simply drunk while building up this world but it was worth it.

You can’t really review this book like every other book. Character development? Almost non-existent. Worldbuilding? A mystery. Resolution? Nothing really resolves.

And I think that’s the whole point of this novel. It will make you awe at everything but doubt everything. I feel like the author was just having fun at putting a big question mark concerning all the possible sciences in the world. Because the whole point is to strip us down of all our comfort zones and knowledge and make us face the facts in front of us. Can you still believe your logic while your eyes are telling you otherwise?

I’m recommending this book to everybody! I don’t care if you end up hating it LOL The experience alone is memorable.

FYI: Annihilation is the first book in the Area X trilogy.

Having loved this novel so much, I couldn’t help but WATCH THE MOVIE starring Nathalie Portman.

Thoughts? It was brilliant. Alex Garland changed A LOT of things in the movie but for once, I think he did the right move. As the book is compelling and beautiful, he succeeds in bringing out those aspects in the movie too. But to completely ADAPT 100% like the book, it would be very hard. For the medium of the movie is not quite the same as words in a white page. The movie looks like what Alex’s version solution to the novel. What he would like as a resolution.

I will still recommend reading the book before the movie ! You may end up being WTF x10 if you haven’t read it, but if you read it you’ll still end up WTF but only WTFx2 you know. The good news is it will be available on Netflix!! Pretty soon, March 12  I think 😉

RATING: 4.7/5

Thank you to Jeff Vandermeer’s publicist for sending me a copy of this book review  !

  1. My copy of this book has been kidnapped by my bf … And I wanted so bad to read it before the movie was out… -_-
It sounds really as the book to be something outsider this world! So different! I have heard the author is going into a brand new genre of written! Thank you for sharing, I am so into watching the movie more than before!

  2. definitely checking this one out. I am already hyped up about the movie, but now that I know there’s a book, I’m looking forward to the book more. 🙂

    Great post!

  3. Ah! I really want to watch this, but I need to order a copy of the book so that I can read it first. I was going to snag it from the library, but since the movie was released, that is almost impossible haha. I have been enjoying exploring Vandermeer though! Glad to see the movie was a success for you ❤

  4. Great to sea post from you again: welcome back! 😀 I really am looking forward to this film (it comes out here on the 13th of March), but after reading this I am quite excited for it. I haven’t read the book yet, but it really sounds like pretty much a must read. Being so excited for the film though, I still want to see that first, before tackling the book. Wonderful post! 😊

  5. Ahh I LOVE this book so much! Have you read the others in the series? I loved book 1 and 2, but I felt like 3 was a bit pointless. But such a cool concept. I had no idea there was a movie adaptation – I HAVE TO WATCH THIS!

  6. It’s always hard to compare some books and movies, especially depending on the order that you enjoyed them! I’m glad that you enjoyed both of these! That’s so rare! Especially, when you say that changes were made to the movie, but sometimes change is good! Lol!

  7. I didn’t love this book but I did think it was pretty interesting how it was executed. I found it really cool that even though, like you said, there’s barely any character development, the characters are still incredibly interesting and compelling. This is definitely a book to go into with absolutely no expectations at all because it’s so weird! I can’t wait to see the movie!

  9. I love Annihilation, this is the first time in a while where I have binged the series…It usually takes me years to finish a series and this time I was about to read the last book but went on vacation and didn’t want to bring that one with me, they take to much concentration. I want to see the movie because I love the book so much but I think it would be hard to adapt it word for word, if that makes sense. But it still looks like it’ll be a good movie either way.

  11. Oh yes, I remember how much you loved this and I always appreciate short descriptions 😉 I love what you said about this being a memorable experience- because even for people who didn’t seem to like it, I’ve seen that they at least say it’s stuck in their mind. I’m glad the movie almost lived up to it- and thanks for the tip on reading the book first. Great review!
