Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

When I first see the cover of Every Heart A Doorway,  I told myself aww this looks like a cute little romantic book you know ! OH HOW WRONG I WAS.

EVERYHEARTADOORWAY

The prologue hooked me up right away, Seanan McGuirewriting style is absolutely entrancing. The stories are about a bunch of children who lived in different worlds until a door opens and they have to return to present day and live in this boring normal universe in a school. Yep that’s it HAHA. I really don’t want to spoil anything but what I can say is, it feels a lot like Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children meets Narnia. We also have a headmistress, a kindhearted old lady who wants to help her students move on and adapt to this life.

What starts as a childish book, ends up being much darker and morbid than I imagined. They are all children but the fact that they each lived in different worlds makes them unique and kind of odd. They don’t follow the same manners nor rules as us so some may even seem very mature. Some may seem psychopaths.

My main complain about this first novel in the series is the main storyline. Usually I love first novels in a series because we get introduced to their world, its novelty and mystery. The novelty element is there but the storyline consistence is confusing. What supposed to lead to a super climax built up to a very flat ending in my opinion.

RATING: 3/5

BUT, having finished the sequels I must say that THEY ARE WAY BETTER (reviews coming pretty soon.) So yes, I would totally recommend this series and give it a try!

Thank you Raincoast for this copy in exchange for an honest review 🙂

  1. Lovely review, Trang! I… I was expecting something mysterious at first, when I picked up this book, and I was surprised by how morbid it was as well haha, horror and I are not the best of friends, that’s why I didn’t continue on with this series. I’m glad though that you enjoyed the next books better 😀

  2. Oh brilliant review for this book Trang, and I’m glad you enjoyed it overall. I’m especially glad to hear the sequels get better, I still have Down Among the Sticks and Bones and Beneath the Sugar Sky on my to-read list and can’t wait to get around to them. 🙂
The covers make me think of cute romance too, but that’s definitely not the story! 😀

  3. I really liked this one but have yet to continue with the other books. When the book first came out, I saw some reviews with similar critique, some folks also thought the storyline got a bit muddled with the inclusion of the mystery and all.
    I liked it though.
And ditto on loving first books in series.

  4. I had a similar experience with the first book and opted to leave a rating on GR but could not find enough to say to review it. It felt so lackluster in the end. But I am hopeful of the next two in the series and pleased to see the sequel agreed with you!

  5. Great review, I have read so many mixed reviews on this one. I think it’s pretty short so I feel like I need to get it from the library and see where I land.

  6. I already loved the first one! Now I am looking forward to the next one even more 🙂 I already love the characters it will deal with.

I kinda agree, that the ending fell a bit flat. It was a bit obvious after a while and then resolved too easily.

  9. Oh, I’ve been meaning to pick this one up for SO LONG. I’ve been eyeing this since last year, actually, but certain mixed reviews put me off but I’m glad to hear the sequels are even better. I just might pick this one up soon!
