These past months were loaded with movies and I decided to do a little recap of what I think about them and rank them in a single post.
I saw a total of 16 movies since January and I want to say a disclaimer first :
- The movie placed in 16th place for example, doesn’t mean it’s bad. The fact that I place a movie on a higher ranking depends on 7 different criteria that I set for movie reviews, each of them is graded on a 10 points scale.
I put it them in an Excel Sheet and sort them out.
And then, I put those scores on percentage and it gives me something like this :
Which means my Top 5 of the year are :
1. A Quiet Place
To my own surprise, this movie scored an almost perfect score in all of my criteria! What I love about it, it’s not a horror movie. Not quite. I would say it’s a lot of suspense and psychological thriller surrounding a family central value. The acting is amazing from the parents to young kids. The cinematography is to die for! The storyline is clear and they thought of everything while building this setting.
2. Jurassic World
This movie jumps right to my list of Favourite sequels of all time! I was very skeptical of how they would continue this story after the first movie. But to my excitement, the new storyline is brilliant! They added a darker and more suspenseful tone. It also tackles a lot of genetic engineering dilemma and they added a twist in the end which makes sense to me because it sparks the ultimate discussion about genetics. I also love the addition of behavioural psychology theories to the future of dinosaurs.
3. Black Panther
I wrote a whole big review about this movie here.
THE WORLD-BUILDING was breathtaking. Hidden from the world, the most advanced city on earth succeeds in technologies and keeping traditions at the same time. I love how they still have their chants, costumes and robes while having a super lab with modern gadgets. As you watch the movie, you discover so many details about that civilization and it made me at awe.
4. Sicario 2
The first Sicario movie is one of my top top movie of all time. I haven’t found another movie with a perfect storyline as Sicario. Needless to say that I had very high expectations on the sequel. It would never be as mindblowing as the first, but the overall storyline is pretty good. I’ve been fascinated with cartel stories and this one goes with the Mexican border and the terrifying journey when you go into war with all the cartels at once.
5. Red Sparrow
This is a successful adaptation from a novel right there. This spy movie does a spectacular job on amplifying the psychological training they have to go through, which I find lacking in a lot of spy movies. It’s slow pace but with enough actions here and there to keep you on the edge of your seat. And you have to see the ending, a brilliant solved puzzle!
Let me know if you want a review on the other movies I put on the graph as well 😉
Well thought out post Trang! I like how you broke it down to provide more I sight into each movie and the criteria 🖤

That’s a GREAT system. Also, this year has some great movies. I’m so grateful for Redbox right now because my wallet cannot afford all these good movies. I still need to watch Red Sparrow. I heard mixed things, but now I’m looking forward to it.

Red Sparrow was a very well thought out movie ! I hope you get the chance to watch it soon 😀 What is Redbox? :O

In the states, Redbox is like a vending for DVDs. The movies are all $2-$3 to rent. You just select the movie and it comes out in a case that you can return to later. It’s what I use when I miss the movie in the theater.

THAT IS THE COOLEST THING I’VE EVER READ LOL We don’t have that here unfortunately 😦 Wish we had RedBox!

Just saw the new Jurassic World last night! I agree with you on a lot of these however I didn’t really enjoy A Quiet Place as everyone else did and I’m really annoyed about that haha.

I have to say everything with Blue was just so adorable I loved all the cute training scenes. But the part where they are swimming away from the island and the long neck is there I was SOBBING.

I’m so behind on movies! The last ones I saw were Solo and Jurassic World. I actually liked Solo a lot and thought it was much better than the reviews made it out to be, but maybe it’s because I went in with low expectations. It just really liked the old school sci-fi adventure feel of it. And Jurassic World was okay too – over-the-top and ridiculous but that was pretty much what I expected. My kid enjoyed it at least!

Indeed, with Solo they went with a more classical approach and that’s very good ! 🙂 However, I didn’t find Jurassic World ridiculous at all ahah in fact the scientific problems they mentioned on the movie are quite actual from what I know and I love how they incorporate the suspense while maintaining the family friendly vibe was very smart 😀 But then again, I might be a bit too nerdy and be biased by the dinosaurs 😉

The super raptor and the “sic ’em!” laser beam was a bit much, and the scene with the hamster ball was beyond over the top, lol. But it was fun, in its insanity!

LOOL okay yeah the laser beam was pretty useless I was trying to find the reason why they would put it ..🤔and nope there was no relevant reason

A quiet place certainly was a very cool and fun film. One that really managed to crank up the tension in a very good way. One of the better thrillers/horror movies that I have seen in a while. Have yet to see the Jurrassic Park sequel, but really looking forward to that one. This was a great list and I love your rating system 😊😊

It surprised me how A Quiet Place ended up being my top 1 LOL Indeed, the amount of suspense and horror elements is perfectly balanced. I hope you like the Jurassic World sequel, I heard a lot of mixed reviews but it’s been one of my favourites so far ❤

I took 3 hours to find a way on how to improve my rating scale HAHA and then end up.. doing some maths T_T Thank you! Let me know if you liked both movies 😀 Red Sparrow is a little bit underrated, I hope it gets more recognition!

Hahaha I LOVE the graphs!!! I’ve always wanted to find a clear way to rank things, that includes different criteria and their relative importance to the general rating, this is perfect!! 😀
I haven’t seen any of these movies but I found a Quiet Place really intriguing, if you think it’s good I’ll probably watch it! 🙂

I saw a lot of mixed reviews for Jurassic World so I guess it depends on what you like in movies LOL I just know at the core of what my criteria, is if I want to watch it over and over again it’s a win 😉 Hope you enjoy it!
