Great post, Lashaan. I think most people I’ve run across on my blog and others are decent humans, but I think it’s nice to be reminded that there are unwritten rules of conduct😁
Thanks, Tammy! I do occasionally run into haters that have no good reason to leave negativity on my posts, but at least most people here are fantastic and are so very kind! 😀 P.S. Like you! 😀
Thanks for the shoutout. I think part of the reason there is no actual blogging etiquette is because of the high rate of turnover for most blogs. The majority don’t seem to last more than 6-24months and a lot of the people coming into it seem to be attention seeking whatevers. It is hard for anything to develop with that level of churn and selfishness built into it.
I’m with you on the commenting to others comments. If someone has taken the time to read my post and type out some thoughts on it, the least I can do is acknowledge them. Makes me glad I’m not a big blogger with 50+ comments on every post 🙂
No problem. 🙂 And you’re right, so many blogs/bloggers disappear just as fast as they appear. Most of those are only here for selfish reasons and don’t give a dime about what others actually think or feel.
I mean… even if I had a 100 comments, I think I’d adapt to it and make sure to answer everyone, even if it means one less post per week. That much appreciation/love can’t be overlooked! 😛
Interesting post, Lash. It is good to be reminded of these things once in a while. I think being genuine goes a long way in building relationship with other bloggers and other humans in general.
Great post! I’ve unfortunately seen some really mean comments and posts on blogs, but luckily it’s not very often. I never understand how someone can go to a person’s blog to comment something negative or mean about the blogger.
Thank you! Tell me about it. I’ve seen some drop by my own posts and I never understood why I was a target for them. It made me wonder if I did/said something wrong to them in some past life… 😛 Hopefully they’ll go hide and stay in their caves more often than not.
You’re welcome. Luckily people have been pretty nice to me so far (watch, I’ll get a nasty comment tomorrow), but I’ve gotten upset for other people. I’m sorry that happened to you.
Ahh I love this post so much ❤ Being respectful is of course,a must and I love that you mentioned replying to comments, too. We all get busy and it's sometimes complicated to answer to everything, but I just love it when I feel like my thoughts and the time I took to read and comment is acknowledged, too and it makes me feel like the blogger is welcoming and wants to start a conversation and interact with the community and this always makes me so, so happy. ❤
Wonderful post!! ❤
Thank you so much, Marie! 😀 Oh maaan, tell me about it. I’ve encountered some bloggers that never replied to any of my comments even if I left one for a couple of straight posts. It made no sense and I just had to give up on them before wasting more of my time on their blogs hahah I definitely think that everyone deserves a reply, even if it’s a short one, to let them know that they’re heard. How can a couple of minutes of our time be too much after all? If we can take a bathroom break, we can answer comments! Hahaha 😀
Right here with you on that, even just a couple minutes here and there. It always makes me happy to see comments being acknowledged and liked by a blogger! 🙂
Hey Lashaan! I absolutely agree with these blogging etiquette tips that you provided! The blogging community is so friendly and respectful, and I am so happy to be part of it! They always say that “people on the Internet can be very mean” and you see that sometimes on other social media platforms, but it’s pretty awesome that bloggers are pretty nice people for the most part. I’ve been blogging for 2 years and I haven’t received a rude comment so far 🙂
Hi Sophie! I’m glad you agree and I do hope that you won’t run into those horrible, mean folks that crawl around the blogosphere looking for an innocent target. I’ve ran into some over the past years and they make no sense at all! I’m just like 99% of the community I engage with is fantastic! 😀
Hahahaha as much as I’d like to agree, I just can’t. You’ll never see any good research having Wikipedia in their references! But I do admit that it is still a fantastic starting point for anyone to learn about anything! 😀
It’s snobbism, that’s what it is! Believe me, I know, I tend to eschew Wikipedia for other sources when making footnotes too – but it doesn’t mean I don’t check Wikipedia first 😛
Great post, Lashaan! I definitely agree that no comment should be left unanswered. Although, I do see how this can be a problem for big bloggers who get dozens of comments every day.
Thank you so much, Alex! I just find that comments are part of the post and that leaving them unanswered makes me wonder why people even post anyways! They might as well keep their content to themselves if they are to just post and ignore comments hahah
GAHHH I’ve been guilty of some of these. I think maybe we all have even if for a short time. Blogging can be so overwhelming on your time in ways you don’t expect. It’s why blogger don’t last long overall. I’m a lot better now, of course, though I’ve probably lost readers for not always being prompt commenting back. It’s been a learning curve, that’s for sure. Congrats on 4 years though Lashaan! That’s seriously an accomplishment. ❤️
You’re right, it’s not an easy task to be a blogger and to stay for the long haul. It’s a challenge, and with it comes plenty of etiquette to make it a liveable space hahah I’m just super glad that you stuck around and are still doing super good for yourself, Dani! 😁
Great post Lashaan! I have only been in this “blogging world” for less than 2 months, but I completely agree with what you said. In the end it’s always just about being polite and kind to people, and these are also great rules for life in general, but sadly people tend to forget them when they’re online! 🙂
Thanks Juliette! And yes, it’s nice to remind some people that there are things that are perceived one way by you, and another by someone else. And some people just lash out on others for no good reason just because there’s a computer screen and so much distance between them and their victim 😕
Oooh I love that post because everything is right!!! C’est du bon sens et de la simple politesse 😉 Like my grandma told me “don’t do to others what you’d not like they would do to you”!
These are all good standards to live by, and probably not just through blogging. Giving credit where credit is due is valuable in a lot of situations. It shows that you have a sense of respect.
The only comments that I never reply to are the ones that are clearly spam. I also try to make sure to comment on any blogs whose writers comment on mine. It’s good to keep that sense of community alive.
Great points! Being fairly new to blogging, this really helped affirm what I thought to be true. I had been answering all comments because I thought it was the right thing to do. Also, if someone follows me, I follow them. I’m thinking that is also a nice thing to do. Giving credit where credit is due – also very important! Thank you!
Thank you so much! And yes! I mean… The guilt would eat me alive if I don’t answer every person who takes the time to exchange with me too. And that’s an interesting one! I used to do the follow for follow thing but then realized that some people only did it to get a follow and then they disappear from your life hahah It’s why I take the time to select the right people to follow or follow back 😂
Excellent post! When I started off blogging last year I think I could have done with some unofficial ‘rules’ or a newbies blogging guide because I wasn’t too sure what the heck I was doing! I soon realised that the more I gave in terms of interaction the more I got back i.e. more interaction! So when I left comments on other blogs and got nothing back it left me disheartened. Ultimately I unfollowed some blogs where I enjoyed the posts but never received a reply to my comments because I felt like I was talking into air. I always comment back – it can be late but I’ll always do it!
Luckily I haven’t come across any mean comments on other people blogs but yeuch, I can believe they’re out there and I just don’t understand the point or need to do that. Debate is one thing, nasty attitudes are another.
Thank you so much, Gerry! And I know exactly what you mean. I felt like I was talking to a wall in those cases and I hated that feeling. I definitely don’t want anyone to feel what I felt and make sure that a reply is the least I could do.
Ahh, I can assure you that they are just there too ruin the person’s day with their rude comments. Sometimes I try to find a reason for those mean comments although I know they are there for no food reason! Hope you’ll never come across those!
I love this post! 😍 I definitely agree that there are some implicit rules in the blogging community even though no one ever writes about them! 😂 My personal rule is with the “likes” : when it’s possible, I always try to leave a like especially if I’m not commenting. It’s my way of showing support when I’m too busy/don’t have or take the time to properly comment back 😊
Yay! Thank you, Caroline! It’s fun to notice them without trying to look for them too hahah Ohh, that’s nice! It at least tells the person that you heard them and, honestly, that’s what counts the most! 😁
Giving credit where credit is due is so important!! Even if I was only loosely inspired by someone’s post, I still credit them because I don’t want them to think I copied it
“I started to wonder if such things [as etiquette] existed in the blogging world.” Ok I almost fell out of my chair. But the fact is: the existence of etiquette only comes after the boorishness breaks out. Etiquette is the making of rules that tell boors they’re out of line. If there was no crass behavior, we would need etiquette.
Hahah indeed! It was just a plaisanterie, in the sense that it’s pretty crazy that even in the virtual world, we find ourselves in front of all that boorishness that we see in real life. A world where etiquettes don’t exist is pretty much impossible with mankind, huh?
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words a lot! 😀 Wish there weren’t any need for etiquettes but with all those “evil” folks out there, we don’t have much choice but to unconsciously create etiquettes. 😮
Thank you! Oh yes. Basic behaviours that everyone should have but then again.. We always have those bad apples that need us to remind them of all these! 😛
I think you have an excellent blog and I appreciate all your comments. I may not get to them immediately, but they mean a lot.
