The Diabolic by S.J Kincaid : Cinder meets Blade Runner

I don’t even know how to start this review oh my god. All I’m going to say is The Diabolic just gave me hope for Young Adults novel. While reading this novel, it didn’t feel like childish to me.

It could be marketing as Adult Sci-Fi/Fantasy and I would believe it.

The novel starts out with the scene where a Diabolic, named Nemesis, wakes up from its sleep and we get introduced on what they are. Diabolics are what I called bodyguards for rich people. Their purpose in life is to protect the child they’ve been assigned to. They are also as young as the child. So when the two of them grow up, they mostly become best friends. But with one condition: The Diabolic is deadly AS F**CK.  They only swear to protect one person, so if anyone around them seem like a threat they won’t hesitate to go into KILL MODE.  Including their own family, or friends.

The universe is also very rich and full of surprises. We have the Empire and some Senators who fight for science but the Emperor condemns anyone who roots for science. So the story follows the Senator’s Daughter,  Sidonia, who’s been summoned to the galactic court for execution since her father has disobeyed the Emperor. (The Emperor is also this twisted little guy who likes to watch the people around their victims suffer first so that’s why he summoned the daughter and not the Senator). What the Emperor doesn’t know however, is that Sidonia’s Diabolic is Nemesis. Of course she won’t let her come to the Emperor unprepared.

I’m not going to tell you more than this because I think it’s more exciting to read this book when you know the least of it.

Don’t read the blurb on Goodreads, it spoils too much LOL

THE PLOT TWISTS!! OMG I was on edge for every second, didn’t know what to expect and then BAM another thing happened and little do I know I have more feelings than I can count. The author is like HA IN YOUR FACE.

Full-packed action and great character development. I really fell for the bond and friendship between Sidonia and Nemesis. You see once again the big question of cyborg vs human, can they feel the emotions like we do? Can they love someone naturally since they were programmed to protect only one person? What happened when they become un-bound?  All the side characters were so well introduced that I wasn’t suspecting how they all wrap up in the end, but they did.  It gave the ending such a strong effect!

There’s a sequel THE EMPRESS, just released this fall!  Very excited to start it 😀

For fans of : Blade Runner, Cinder and cyborg, kick-ass motherf**ckers  in general

  1. Well, you already had me with Bladerunner. I love that film, and the new sequel this year I loved even more. This sounds like an absolutely must read novel for me, so I have just added it to my list. This review was very cool, and played a very large part in me wanting to read this now! ASAP LOL 😂😂😂

  2. I don’t even like sci-fi that much and I liked this book 😂. It’s so stabby and full of violence I LOVE IT. Also it’s so clever?? And those plot twists had me gasping really. I DIDN’T KNOW THERE WAS A SECOND BOOK WHAAAAAAT.

  3. Wow, well first of all, I’m so glad you finally read a YA book that you could rate 5-stars ahah, I feel like it had been a while 😛 I haven’t read this one, but heard about it a little bit… I haven’t read the synopsis either and apparently that’s a good thing. You made it sound so, so very cool, but I’m wondering if it’s like, a really violent book, or if it’s okay? 🙂
thank you for the great review!! 🙂

  4. Yay I am so excited you loved this! Sounds like something I desperately need to read now because SOMEHOW I HAVE THIS ALREADY AND HAD NO IDEA WHAT IT WAS ABOUT UNTIL THIS MOMENT??? I also bought the second (without knowing anything about them) because I knew I had the first and like to have complete series lol. Better be good because I must have spent almost $30 on this series so far. Yay. Need to read this soooo bad.

  5. You know earlier this week I was playing around with the idea of taking The Diabolic off my to-read list, but then I saw your review and saw that you described this book as Cinder meets Blade Runner and it’s jumped to the top of my to-read list! 😀
Great review Trang, I am so glad you loved this book and I am definitely going to bump The Diabolic up my to-read list, I need to get around to it soon that’s for sure. 🙂

  6. Yeah, I just finished the sequel. I believe this first book was among my favorites either last year or the year before. The Diabolic is awesome 🙂 Make sure you’re emotionally prepared for book two though . . . I wasn’t. (Still not sure how I feel about the sequel . . .)

      1. LOL 🙂 It’s hard to say. There were aspects of The Empress I thought were great, and other aspects that made me angry.

This leaves me conflicted because I think the author intended readers to feel angry, and I consider good fiction to be fiction that inspires emotion.

However, I also felt a little upset with the author for making me feel that way which makes me want to give the book a low rating.

  7. Oh Trang, my heart goes out to you suffering migraines ❤ That is so rough. I hope they have passed. Mine can last for days and render my in bed, debilitated. Sending lots of comforting vibes!

Now on to book stuff!!!! OMG! I have a copy of this here and you have me chomping at the bit to pick it up. Maybe this will be the one to pull me back out of my YA funk. Thanks for the warning about the GR blurb. I will avoid 😉 I did read Scythe recently and it was a stellar YA read.
