The Wicked + The Divine by Kieron Gillen (Vol.1)

MY RATING: ★

2364791

‘ I don’t understand a word she’s saying. Nobody does. All we know is that it means everything. She’s been doing this for an hour, and it’s been all climax. Every second is the best of my life so far. ”

The artwork alone can steal all the stars from my rating. But not only  the drawings are great, the storyline is astonishing.

Imagine a world where your idols are Gods. Littereally Gods. They are selected in a particular way and they have 2 years of stardom, after that they have to die. The first volume introduces us to a young fan who got caught up with one of the wildest God of the gang : Luci… Lucifer 😉

thecaracters

Résultats de recherche d'images pour « wicked divine characters »The diversity in the characters  is a big plus ! Not just culturally, sexually or ethnically. The diversity resides in their personalities and how it affects the way they interact with other characters and the situations they live in. We have also different generations, from an old granny to adults to a little child. The Gods selection don’t have a preference. Anyone can be one.The artwork successfully brings their personalities to life by varying their fashion style.

thechumour

IT’S HILARIOUUS. Dark humour with a bit of sexual here and there is my kind of laughing out loud. The author did a wonderful job! It’s not over the edge and it’s one of those talks you have with your closest friends, talking about anything without to restrain tumblr_inline_n75g8tvonq1r77eonyourself and let the flow go. It’s very rare to see this kind of narrative onto actual graphic novels and I’m glad this one has it. It gives a good portraits of how Millenials rule the world as Gods and normal people would react to it LOL.

Of course, it’s only the first volume so some of the elements can be confusing but as we do not have the whole world building picture, I think it’s pretty good as a first read. I would actually want to read the second one with that awesome ending 😉

Have you read it ? Let me know if this graphic novel would interest you!

  4. Girl yes! The art in this is awesome. It’s the sort of illustrations I go crazy for: super clean with neat, think lines and I love the coolness of the colors. Love love love!! the art. As for the story, I didn’t like it much. It wasn’t what I expected, which is okay, but I was confused while reading it. I agree that there isn’t much world building so maybe I should give the second one a go.
