This post was inspired by my last post about the struggles of being a bookworm, and one the struggles was to explain to other people how YA books can be very good books even for a mature and older audience.
Here are my favourites so far (let’s be fair and not include the Harry Potter series LOL).
1.ILLUMINAE by Amie Kauffman and Jay Kristoff
I don’t think I would ever shut up about this book. All of my friends know how much a die-hard fan I am. You have a bad-ass female character who can code and program like a pro, a hopeless romantic boy who can fight like a champion and still has a witty humour, and on top of that, a psychopath artificial intelligence spaceship monitoring machine who employs sarcasm better than any human. THE GRAPHICS of this book are to diiie for. I mean it’s ART all over the book.
P.S: Brad Pitt is the director for the movie coming soon ! 😀
P.P.S: The Sequel GEMINA came out a few days ago!
2. SIX OF CROWS by Leigh Bardugo
If you thought anti-heroes and a gang of mischief characters were interesting, then Six of Crows will blow your mind. The complexity in both characters and relationships is phenomenal. The Suicide Squad of the new literary world. It goes beyond your expectations. It’s not just about stating the obvious. It’s about playing in the shadows and transcending the obvious. This caper story has one of the most entertaining cast of characters, and it’s far from being short in diversity. This is a story where every reader will find something to love. This is a story where the writing will take you too beautiful places.
P.S: CROOKED KINGDOM (#2) is out and the pages are red omg complimenting the back ones in the first book!
3. CINDER by Marissa Meyer (The Lunar Chronicles)
I LOVE FAIRYTALE RETELLING and this is by far the greatest retelling I’ve read. Cinder is about a cyborg who lives in a New China (a city mixed with asian culture and caucasian, reminds me of the city in Big Hero 6). The Planet Earth is in conflict with the Moon, ruled by the Queen of Lunars, Levana. She hides behind her glamour to charm people and has the capability to control them and their perception . One of the most evil character in the YA world. All of your favourite fairytales character will be at the rendez-vous.
4. THE YOUNG ELITES by Marie Lu
After the blood fever has waged on, some people got scarred from it and rejected from their families. Adelina was one of them, with her eye patched and gray hair, she’s marked forever as cursed. But what people start to fear is that a new group called The Young Elites start to surface and demonstrate extraordinary abilities. This series will take you to the path of one of the realest character complexity and development ever. Struggling in choosing the good and the bad, the friends and betrayals, families and hate.
P.S: The last of the trilogy MIDNIGHT STAR just came out!
P.P.S: A movie adaptation is expecting soon
5. A MONSTER CALLS by Patrick Ness
A dark, gripping and mindblowing story illustrated by wonderful artwork. This is a story following a young boy’s journey Conor, to help coping with a dying mother. A heartwrenching plot where words have such control over the reader’s emotional state. It’s so short and simple yet so powerful. Just for your infomation, I CRIED ATTHE END OF THIS BOOK. OKAY MERCI AU REVOIR.
Do you agree with this list ? What other books would you add to the list ? I’d love to read some recommendations 🙂

Yes, yes, yes to Six of Crows! It’s one of the few novels I think EVERYONE should try… I can’t wait to start Crooked Kingdom, for I’ve heard it’s even better than Six of Crows. Amazing list!

Thank you so much!!! Six of Crows is a masterpiece!! I couldn’t praise a YA novel more than that one. I have yet to read the sequel as well, but I’m also scared that it might not live up to expectations AND scared to finish the duology and never see Kaz and friends again! 😦

A Monster Calls is going to be one hell of a experience. Make sure you got tissues by your side for that one! If it has a similar effect on you as it did on so many others (me included), you’re going to have a terrifying read! 😛 And yaaas to Six of Crows! That book is just gold.

I’ve only read Illuminae so far BUT I have Six of Crows on my nightstand, I want to read A Monster Calls before watching the movie and I have already wishlisted the box set for the Lunar Chronicles. So, there’s that! I personally wasn’t much of a fan of the Legend series by Marie Lu, so I am not sure I will pick up the Young Elites. Great post!!

You definitely give A Monster Calls a chance (its the only one I read of those two). Its short and well-written. It evokes great emotions and it might do wonders for you.

The movie doesn’t have a release date whatsoever yet! You totally got time to read that badboy (and maybe even its sequel) before the movie comes out! 😛
